CENTER FOR HEALTH RESEARCH

Introduction

The Center for Health Research University of Indonesia (CHR-UI or Pusat Penelitian Kesehatan Universitas Indonesia) was established in the year of 1983, and at present has an impressive national and international reputation.

Objectives

The main aim of the CHR-UI is to provide health research, training and public services in support of national growth and development. Furthermore, it aims to expand institutional capacity to initiate and manage inter- and multi-disciplinary health research programs, to sharpen and focus research analysis and results, and ultimately to disseminate research findings to appropriate audiences for the benefit of the community at large.

 

Main Research Areas

The CHR-UI continues to be involved with projects in the areas of reproductive health, sexually high risk behaviour and HIV/AIDS, health economics, maternal and child health and survival, child nutrition, quality of care in health services and family planning delivery, roles and status of women, gender differences in primary health service utilization, social marketing aspects of primary health care programs, social and anthropological perspectives of health and social well-being, aging and living arrangements, gender violence, drug abuse, tropical diseases (such as leprosy and tuberculosis), personal and environmental health behaviour such as smoking, clean water and waste treatment, epidemiological effects of electromagnetic fields, and diseases caused by industrial pollutants, as well as occupational health, and many other areas related to health, nutrition, and participatory community development. In later areas, we conduct a program on behavioral changes among injecting drug users, and a project for waste and garbage management, both in Depok community in West Java.

Collaboarative Research

The CHR-UI prides itself on its reputation and achievements in both academic and operational research activities. It is in a unique position to assist the government at the national, regional and local levels and within various government agencies such as: the National Family Planning Coordinating Board/BKKBN, the Ministries of Health, Population, Coordination of People's Welfare, Women's Affairs, Internal Affairs, the National Planning Board/Bappenas, the central bureau of statistics (CBS) other demographic institutes, BNN, BNP. International agencies that collaborated with the CHR-UI include: the Asian Development Bank (ADB), AusAID, AIDSCAP, Family Health International, HIV/AIDS prevention project/HAPP (ASA), Ford Foundation, JICA, Pathfinder International, Population Council, RAND Corp., UNDP, UNFPA, UNICEF, UNESCO, WHO, the World Bank, USAID, the Yamaha Foundation, JPHIEGO, PATH, JSI, and Mercy Corps. The CHR-UI has initiated the networking of 15 research-working groups within the Indonesian Epidemiology Network (IEN). These linkages are with governmental, NGOs and other universities within Indonesia and abroad, and have provided numerous educational, research, and training opportunities. To achieve its goals, the CHR-UI has established networks and affiliated working groups, providing expertise in the areas of: Measles, Dengue Haemorrhagic fever (DHF), Tropical Disease Research (TDR), STI/ HIV/ AIDS and Hospital Management. In addition, the CHR-UI has been involved in numerous large-scale projects including the Indonesia HIV/AIDS Behavioural Surveillance Survey (HAPP/USAID), a women's health profile (Ministry of Women's Affairs), and projects on infant nutrition and zinc supplementation (UNICEF) and adolescent counselling on reproductive health (BKKBN).

Training Activities

The centre exists to bring together faculty members and post graduate students working on health and population research topics, and to provide support for both governmental program-base and population-base health policies. Besides research activities, CHR-UI also organizes and conducts various types of training activities, seminars, and workshops, attended by participants from government institutions, NGOs, other universities and private sectors. Topics covered in the training and seminars included: Maternal-Child Survival Development and Protection, Maternal and Perinatal Health, Adolescent Reproductive Health, Gender Empowerment, Environmental Epidemiology, Early Dengue Diagnostic, Rapid Surveys by Computer-based Technique, Clinical Epidemiology for Dentistry, Hospital Sanitation (Grifith and Curtin Universities, Australia), Application of Regression in Health Research, data Analysis using EPI-Info, Improvement of the Quality of Life of the Aged, Registration of Sick Absenteeism (PERTAMINA), AIDS Symposium for Students, Public Health Approach to HIV Infection, Behavioural Sciences Approach to AIDS Education and Prevention, Mapping of Sexually High Risk Behaviour Groups, Workshops on HIV/AIDS for Religious Leaders, Epidemiology Surveillance of HIV/AIDS (UCLA-Fogarty Training Program, MOH, World Bank, AIDSCAP/FHI) Evaluation for the STD/HIV/AIDS information, education and communication (IEC) training course, Training of Data usage on Policy Development and HIV/AIDS Prevention Program, Health Research Management Training.

Resources

Throughout the years of its academic and research activities, the centre has earned a reputation, largely through the achievements of its academic staff, many of whom are members of distinguished national and international academic societies.

The CHR-UI has a newly appointed director: DR.dr. Sabarinah B. Prasetyo, MSc. The Director is supported by a core of senior researchers with expertise in various fields of public health and community development. They include Prof. dr. Budi Utomo, MPH, PhD; Prof. Dr. Tri Budi W. Raharjo, MA; Dr. drg Mardiati Nadjib, MSc;  DR. Dra. Rita Damayanti, MPH; dr. Tri Yunis Miko Wahyono, MSc; Drs. Heru Suparno, M.Kes; Yudarini, SH, M.Kes; Drs. Dadun, M.Kes; Purwa Kurnia Sucahya, SKM, MSi; dr. Nugroho Soeharno, M.Kes; Dini Dachlia, SKM, MKes; Drs. Ferdinand P. Siagian, MSi; Subarkah, SPi, MSi; Amry Ismail, SKM, MKM; Agus Dwi Setiawan, S.Sos. They are supported by researchers and trainees, whom graduated from various fields of study including anthropology, sociology, public health, nutrition, medicine, law, economics, psychology and geography. Many of these staff members have been actively involved in most of CHR-UI's research projects throughout Indonesia. The CHR-UI is also supported by its own administrative, financial staff and librarian.

The centre is situated in the university's main campus in Depok, West Java, and 35 kilometres southeast of Jakarta. The centre has its own library and computer units, which are equipped with the latest computer hardware and software programs to support both quantitative and qualitative analysis, and to sustain large and small surveys. However, the centre aims to continue to expand its capacity and produce higher levels of quality products.
